The Akron Symphony opens the 2021-22 season with a performance highlighted by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, which looms forever over the history of symphonic music and is filled with wild extremes—sudden outbursts, fearsome energy, and unbridled joy. Duke Ellington’s classic ballet, The River, wraps jazz and gospel melodies in luxurious symphonic textures, with influences of Handel’s Water Music and Debussy’s La Mer.

Years earlier, Florence Price was among the first to answer Dvořák’s plea to American composers: to create an authentic American sound inspired by African-American sources. She succeeded as Ethiopia’s Shadow in America received honorable mention in the Rodman Wanamaker Music Contest in 1932.

Julia Perry’s Short Piece for Orchestra has been described as an “initially raucous, highly energized essay that is brilliantly scored.”
