Did You Know?
A journey into the heart of Russian repertoire begins with Mussorgsky’s evocation of dawn on the Moscow River. Prokofiev’s popular concerto abounds in rhythmic vitality and Slavic lyricism. With the Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony—in the hands of Maestro Zander—you can expect an utterly fresh reading of a well-loved masterwork.
Echoing the mysteries of the sea, Debussy’s La Mer summons the emotional power and psychological depths of wind and waves. Composer Stella Sung’s Oceana introduces a watery dialogue between marine and human life. And Moby Dick rises again in the haunting music of Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite composer.
Also sprach Zarathustra
An evening commemorating the 60th anniversary of NASA and the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. John Adams’ orchestral ball-of-fire A Short Ride in a Fast Machine raises the curtain, opening the way to intensely vibrant scores by two of the greatest film composers of all time. Richard Strauss’ tone poem about the human condition, Also sprach Zarathustra, provided Stanley Kubrick with the signature music for the opening sequence of his 2001: A Space Odyssey.
