The Akron Symphony Chorus will present Fauré’s Requiem on May 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance will take place at St. Sebastian Church in Akron.

Fauré’s Requiem has long been one of the most beloved of all sacred works, one that the composer described as being “as gentle as I am myself,” with a score that is uniquely consoling.

The evening will also feature the Akron Symphony Chamber Choir joining the chorus for Ola Gjelo’s Ubi Caritas, Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Jesu, dulcis memoria.

Gjelo drew inspiration from the Gregorian chant tradition, but composed his Ubi Caritas with an original style that is not based on an existing chant. Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas, one of just 14 works published by the composer, is highlighted by the chant’s free-flowing motion with each voice moving in a hymn-like fashion.

Victoria’s Jesu, dulcis memoria, based on the hymn by Bernard Clairveaux, is an audience favorite and a popular work for choirs to perform.

Single tickets for the performance are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 10 and under. Tickets are available online or by calling the Symphony Box Office at 330.535.8131. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the concert starting at 6:30 p.m.

Doors open at 7 p.m.
