Did You Know?
Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf has been recorded more than 400 times in 12 different languages. This symphonic fairytale uses a cast of vibrant characters and a charming story to introduce children to some of the different instruments of the orchestra. (Source: classicfm.com)
Over the decades, Peter and the Wolf has been performed by virtually every orchestra and conductor and has also attracted an endless list of narrators, including an impressive number of A-listers from virtually every field, among them Sting, David Bowie, Patrick Stewart, John Gielgud, Sophia Loren, Sean Connery, Boris Karloff, Jack Lemmon, William F. Buckley, Captain Kangaroo. (Source: pbs.org)
Prokofiev was commissioned by the Moscow Children’s Theatre to compose a piece for children’s theatre. He chose as his subject the story of a boy and his animal friends capturing a wolf. In the story’s telling Prokofiev assigned each character a musical instrument or class of instruments. The bird was identified with a flute, the cat with a clarinet, the duck with an oboe, Peter’s grandfather with a bassoon, the wolf with horns, and the hunters with percussion. Peter himself was given the entire string section and a jaunty lighthearted melody. (Source: britannica.com)
