Did You Know?

Sue Gillman is the Honorary Chair of Oktoberfest 2019. In the 1950s, Sue was a founding member of the first Akron Symphony Women’s Board, which later became the Akron Symphony Guild. She has served a major role in fundraising for the Akron Symphony Orchestra during her decades of volunteer service.

Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, was married to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy royal event. Horse races in the presence of the Royal Family marked the close of the event that was celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. The decision to repeat the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. (Source: The History of the Oktoberfest)

The Akron Symphony Guild’s Oktoberfest raises funds for the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Youth Symphony, Akron Youth Philharmonic and the Akron Symphony Chorus.
