ASO to present Also sprach Zarathustra on March 16

The Akron Symphony Orchestra will explore the boundaries of space with Also sprach Zarathustra on March 16 at 8 p.m.

The evening will open with John Adams’ orchestral ball-of-fire, A Short Ride in a Fast Machine, followed by excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind by John Williams, one of the greatest film composers of all time.

Guest violinist Jinjoo Cho will then join the Orchestra for Korngold’s Violin Concerto, which is considered one of the supreme masterpieces in musical literature. Since being named a Gold Medalist at the prestigious International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in 2014, Jinjoo has established herself as one of the most vibrant, engaging and charismatic violinists of her generation.

The performance will close with Richard Strauss’ tone poem about the human condition, the iconic Also sprach Zarathustra, which is filled with the composer’s trademark color, virtuosity and dazzling orchestral effects.

A Preview from the Podium, featuring Maestro Christopher Wilkins discussing the evening’s program, will begin at 7 p.m.

Single tickets for the performance start at just $25. Tickets are available online or by calling the Symphony Box Office at 330.535.8131. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the concert as long as seats are available.

The performance will take place at The University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, which is located at 198 Hill Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
