William Grant Still’s spirited and sophisticated "Festive Overture" exhibits traditional architecture, but exudes Hollywood style. It lies halfway between jazz and classical music. Dvořák’s warm-hearted, ecstatic, and deeply lyrical "Cello Concerto" is a showcase for both soloist and orchestra. The brooding intensity of Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” Symphony—his final work—wields an inexorable power over audiences.

William Grant Still Festive Overture
Antonín Dvořák Cello Concerto
Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique”
William Grant Still’s spirited and sophisticated Festive Overture exhibits traditional architecture, but exudes Hollywood style. It lies halfway between jazz and classical music. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto stands out among the many masterpieces he wrote during his years in America. Warm-hearted, ecstatic, and deeply lyrical, it is a showcase for both soloist and orchestra. The brooding intensity of Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” Symphony—his final work—wields an inexorable power over audiences. Its famous march never fails to bring the house down. History agrees with Tchaikovsky’s own assessment: he called it “the best of my works.”
