EarthQuaker & Mozart

January 13 at 7:30 pm

Arvo Pärt borrows from the sound of ancient chants to create a style of purity and austerity. Mozart’s 29th Symphony is among his earliest masterpieces: imaginative, unpredictable, balanced, and perfect. Jazz musician-composer-arranger Mary Lou Williams holds a unique place in the development of jazz, especially through the incorporation of classical music into her work. Akron’s EarthQuaker Devices soars to new heights in a sequel to 2022’s live ASO recording.

Four different sound worlds emerge from the same classical orchestra. Arvo Pärt borrows from the sound of ancient chants to create a style of purity and austerity, now wildly popular and widely imitated. Mozart’s 29th Symphony is among his earliest masterpieces: imaginative, unpredictable, balanced, and perfect. Jazz musician-composer-arranger Mary Lou Williams holds a unique place in the development of jazz, especially through the incorporation of classical music into her work. The Symphony’s collaboration with Akron’s EarthQuaker Devices soars to new heights, in a sequel to 2022’s live ASO recording.

featuring the Theron Brown Quartet

Arvo Pärt Fratres
Wolfgang Amadè Mozart Symphony No. 29 in A
Mary Lou Williams Zodiac Suite
Jake Gunnar Walsh & Jon Sonnenberg Conflagration (with EarthQuaker Devices)

Arvo Pärt has adapted the sounds of ancient chanting to create his signature austere style, now wildly popular and widely imitated. Mozart’s 29th Symphony radiates joy and confidence as a perfect youthful masterpiece. Mary Lou Williams helped shape the evolution of jazz, partly through her lifelong devotion to classical music. The Akron Symphony and EarthQuaker Devices fan the flames anew in Conflagration, a sequel to their 2022 live recording.
