Organ Symphony

October 21, 2023 at 7:30 pm

Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony stars the king of instruments, and it packs a powerful punch. The work is part spiritual journey, part sonic theater. Perkinson’s Worship, an orchestral fantasy on the familiar hymn tune, Old 100th, moves between jazz, gospel, and classical styles. Brilliant, sumptuous, and transcendent, Respighi’s Church Windows takes its title from celebrated Italian stained-glass artwork.

Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony delivers aural thrills in unique ways. Part spiritual journey, part sonic theater, the ASO’s performance features Robert Mollard on the recently acquired Rodgers digital organ, which can reproduce sounds from any instrument in the world. Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s works bring together the traditions of jazz, pop, film, and classical music. His tone poem, Worship, is an orchestral fantasy on the Old 100th, familiar from hymnals of many faiths. Brilliant, sumptuous, and transcendent, Ottorino Respighi’s orchestrations remain unsurpassed. Church Windows takes its title from well-known Italian stained-glass windows, but its sound is signature Respighi.
