Tchaikovsky & Bowden

April 6 at 7:30 pm

Composer Clarice Assad and trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden introduce a work co-commissioned by the ASO, based on paintings by surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie. The evening takes inspiration from folk song and popular music, in Higdon’s "Reel Time" to American folk traditions at the heart of Montgomery’s "Strum." Tchaikovsky echoes of Mozart and Brahms in "Souvenir de Florence" but in his own deeply personal voice.

Composer Clarice Assad and trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden—two of classical music’s brightest young stars—introduce a work co-commissioned by the ASO, based on paintings by surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie, and the parties she threw for some of jazz’s greatest legends. The evening takes inspiration from folk song and popular music, from Appalachian-style fiddling in Jennifer Higdon’s Reel Time to American folk traditions at the heart of Jessie Montgomery’s Strum. Tchaikovsky was always restored by Italy’s climate, cuisine, and legendary art. In Souvenir de Florence, he recalls that most artistic Italian city through echoes of Mozart and Brahms, but in his own deeply personal voice.
